Description of Titus
Review THE SUNThursday, November 22, 2012Lowell, MassachusettsTitus tells the tale of one mans amazing journeyBy Dennis Whitton, Sports Editor dwhitton@lowellsun.comLowell - In this city, Dr. Titus Plomaritis is widely known by students of Lowell High School football history as the 5-foot, 5-inch scatback who scored all 20 points in the 1948 Thanksgiving Day game against Lawrence.Lowell won the dramatic game, 20-19, when Plomaritis scored with 4 seconds left and kicked the winning extra point, capping an undefeated season for second-year coach Ray Riddick, who himself would become the greatest football legend of them all.But Plomaritis story is so much more than that. And now he has come out with his autobiography, simply titled Titus which tells his story in 600 pages, with 250 photos and uncountable memories. The 83-year-old Plomaritis will be signing copies of his book, available for sale, at todays Lowell-Haverhill football game at Cawley Stadium. He has also been asked to perform the pregame coin toss. The book was six years in the making for Titus, and in the last couple of years hes been aided and edited by former Sun sports guru Sam Weisberg, a close friend. All proceeds will go to the Plomaritis Family Foundation for charitable works. The book opens with a dedication to Titus wife of over 60 years, Claire. From there it details the childhood of a little kid being raised on Gorham Street by strict parents who emerged from Greece. His father never attended a football game, and didnt even attend Titus and Claires wedding. At age 14 he told Titus to drop out of Lowell High School and get to work to support the family. That's just the way things were back then.Titus went to the Lowell High headmaster to tell him this, and the headmaster and superintendent of schools ended up driving to his fathers barber shop in a police cruiser and threatened Demosthenis to let his son continue his education. It worked. Then, at age of 17 Titus joined the army and became a paratrooper, seeing action in occupied Japan. He returned to Lowell the spring of 1948 and later that fall would come his Thanksgiving Day Miracle. Here are just a few of the chapters in this all-encompassing autobiography:His glorious days with the Red and GrayHis four seasons of football at Boston University, teaming with BU legend Harry Agganis. After he declined a four-year scholarship offer from Mississippi State. Many memories of Ray Riddick and long-time baseball coach Stan Stoklosa. His friendship with Mike Demoulas and a history of the beginning of the Market Basket grocery stores. He says he sold Demoulas bags of chicken at the door of his original store, on Drummer Street. His involvement in politics. He went to the White House at the invitation of President Jimmy Carter and had Rosalyn Carter visit his home in Pelham. He also helped Hugh Gallen become Governor of New Hampshire and his wife Claire was a N.H. state rep.He became an accomplished golfer, tennis player, and billiards player. IN addition, he was 1-0 in a Golden Glove career that ended when Riddick came to him and said Stick to football, son. There are memories galore of former Lowell High teammates and pals, Vesper Country Club friends, and moreAnd information on his becoming a nationally renowned chiropractor with his main office in Pelham. The photographs in the book are classics. Many from the Lowell High days but plenty of others from various times in Plomaritis life. Titus himself was a studio photographer at one time. The book will appeal directly to Lowell High fans but there are wide points of interest to any student of local history.Plomaritis is like a real life Forest Gump, showing up in the world of athletics, politics, war, medical science, and more. The book, if its possible, has too much information, but it is incredible that an 83-year-old man has such immaculate recall of events covering his entire lifetime. If you want to read about an amazing, historic life, pick up this book. Its a read keepsake. Read more About the Author N/A Read more
