Description of Sophie...Best Friends are Forever

Review Beautiful dog that had great patience and a story of a Naperville dog who found her mission in therapy work as detailed in the book - David Sharos,The Naperville Sun

  • All the dogs in the program are good, but Sophie was exemplary. Ted was a great handler, and people would often request them specifically. They were great team and always a favorite here -

  • Sophie, could not have been a better therapist, whether her new friend was young or old, she delivered that special something, either a welcomed distraction for children, or a comforting, nostalgic reminder for older adults who had grown up watching Lassie. Sweet Sophie was a friend for patients and staff alike. In fact, the staff looked forward to Sophie's visits as much as the patients. -

Read more From the Author BiographyWhen Sophie came into my life, my focus began to change. I had been a dog lover all my life and had a dog as a child and several more dogs from the time my children were small. With Sophie though, I experienced a devotion and special emotional connection with her. We spent thousands of hours together. My previous dogs were wonderful pets; but Sophie, she was something special, a 'one-of-a-kind' dog. I always taught obedience to my previous dogs so that they were good family members and courteous to people that they met. While training Sophie, I realized that she had not only the desire to please, but had a happy demeanor, sensitivity, and a special connection with the people she met that made it obvious that therapy work was perfectly suited for her. I began to look forward to my every other Friday nights at the hospital with Sophie. My anticipation matched hers, and together we made a great team. I have no doubt that we helped many people who needed either someone to talk to or just some quiet consolation on an otherwise lonely Friday night.Writing the book was difficult work, and it took a year to complete. It wascertainly much harder, both physically and emotionally, than I thought it wouldbe but I felt rewarded after the effort. Sophie's story was an amazing one andI realize now that I had a great privilege to accompany her along her journey. While writing, I also visit junior high schools to speak to the students about animal assisted therapy work and volunteering, particularly volunteering and visiting nursing home senior residents with senior dogs. I have recruited many students who regularly donate their time to this endeavor. These visits also inspired some of these students to write articles about their experiences; two of which won a prestigious Maxwell Medallion fort heir works from the Dog Writers Association of America. Since this book was initially published, I have continued my writing career and have written many articles about dogs, primarily about collies. These articles have been published in ruffDRAFTS, the quarterly newsletter of the national organization, Dog Writers Association of America, AWCA (American Working Collie Association, and the Collie Nose Newsletter. Based on these articles as well as my book, I was honored to receive a press pass for the 2019 and 2020 AKC Westminster Dog Show in New York, writing several articles about that event. You can view many stories that I have written at either lizzysfund.org or sophiebestfriendsforever.com. Read more
