Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive 1968

Description for Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive 1968

Review John Harrison does an eloquent job writing what it was like being in the infantry during the Vietnam war. I know, I was in the infantry in Vietnam. There is a statistic which states that only 1 out of 10 who served in Vietnam were in the infantry. All of us have been asked what that was like at one point since our return. It is an impossible question for most of us to answer in part much less in full. John Harrison manages to do this in his book, Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive. So, if you are inclined and wonder what it was like, or you want to tell someone else what you went through, buy this book. Show it to your friend. It tells that story. To, 'LT' John Harrison- thank you Sir.Salute.From Canadian AmazonGrant Adriaan Vogt5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and personalApril 8, 2018Format: Kindle Edition|Verified PurchaseThe book and stories within are easy to follow, very well written, andalmost impossible to put down. However, this turned out to be an informative, boots-on-the-ground perspective. Harrison has a nice logical and engaging writing style, incorporating plenty of drywit. I enjoyed the book. Read more From the Back Cover This is the story of the Tet Offensive 1968, in II Corps, Vietnam. I have tried to tell it as truly and accurately as I can. Then, I showed it to the men that I served with, and that made it much better. No one has told the real story of what actually happened in Vietnam. Part of that is because it is a really big story. The 101st Airborne Division, and even the Marines for example both suffered more casualties in Vietnam than they did in all of World War II. It was a long bloody war that was different every where, and every year that we fought. This is our story, the story of the Vietnam era 'Band of Brothers', the 3rd Battalion, 506th Airborne Infantry, the famous Currahees of the 101st Airborne Division. In World War II, they were the 'Battered Bastards of Bastogne', while in Vietnam we were known as the 'Bastard Battalion' that put out fires all over II Corps and, after we left even went into Cambodia looking for 'Charlie'. Airborne! Read more About the Author During the Vietnam War I enlisted in the Army as a private. I was commissioned as an Infantry Lieutenant upon completion of Infantry Officer Candidate School at 20years old. I was assigned to Company A,3rd Battalion (Airborne), 506th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade,101stAirborne Division. The 506th is the original 'Band of Brothers' in Stephen Ambrose famous book about World War II. My book 'Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive' is the continuation of that story in Vietnam. Initially I was the Executive Officer, I later got the additional job of Rifle Platoon Leader. While in Vietnam I served as a Rifle Platoon Leader and as the Executive Officer, including combat operations during the Tet Offensive. My book'Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive' is mostly about our bloody year in Vietnam, but it includes some fun times as well. My second book, 'It Might Have Been' is about the life choices we make and how those choices can resurface in the strangest ways. There are seven stories told in 'It Might Have Been', each explores the human experience. There is one about the effect the death of a child has on an already broken family and another about a gay Marine trying to get married. These stories were written as I was also writing 'Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive'. I hope you enjoy both books. Upon returning from Vietnam I graduated from Georgetown University and then worked in real estate while going to law school at night at George Washington University. While practicing law I also worked in real estate and mortgage banking for about 30 years. Finally a few years ago I retired from the law and achieved my lifetime ambition to be a high school history teacher. I did that for 7 years. Now I write full time. Read more
