First Train Out of Denver

Description for First Train Out of Denver

Review First Train Out of Denver is destined to take its place alongside the great travel essays of our time. Outwardly a story of travel and adventure it is cleverly interlaced with humor, philosophy and social observations written with a descriptive flair that is often remarkable and at times beautiful. He has blurred the line between poetry and prose while drawing the line between the world of actual reality and the curtain of willful ignorance society has draped over it. It fits in effortlessly on my shelf alongside Twain, Kerouac, Hemingway and Thoreau with its philosophical yet beautiful writing style. Leo's writing style is amazing and this is one of my all time favorite books. This is one of those books in which the author pulls you into the story to such a degree that it feels as if you were there experiencing everything with him; almost as if the story is a recollection of your own memory rather than the conveyance of someone else's. This book is full of vivid scenes and near-poetic prose - you will not want to put it down! Move over Kerouac, London, and Thompson. Jenkins is taking the prime position on the bookshelf. Written with such fluidity and prose, you find yourself getting nervous as you near the end of the book because you don't want it to end. Great read, written in such detail that at times I could honestly hear the lonesome whistle of a Southbound Train.
