Stripped of their titles and degrees, Charley, Sherrie, and Ruth introduce themselves with the kind of personal warmth and empathy so prevalent at the TLC retreats. Overcoming Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors is not only a great introduction and review of the ComB model for treating these disorders, but through case examples, homework illustrations, and motivation building, the authors guide the reader through the transformation of this model into a self-tailored treatment program. I highly recommend this workbook for those who struggle with, live with, or work with BFRBs! Allen H. Unfreedom of the Press

Description of Unfreedom of the Press

From five-time number one New York Times best-selling author, Fox News star, and radio host Mark R. Levin comes a groundbreaking and enlightening book that shows how the great tradition of the American free press has degenerated into a standardless profession that has squandered the faith and trust of the American public, not through actions of government officials but through its own abandonment of reportorial integrity and objective journalism. Unfreedom of the Press is not just another book about the press. Levin shows how those entrusted with news reporting today are destroying freedom of the press from within: "not government oppression or suppression", he writes, but self-censorship, groupthink, bias by omission, and passing off opinion, propaganda, pseudo-events, and outright lies as news. With the depth of historical background for which his books are renowned, Levin takes the reader on a journey through the early American patriot press, which proudly promoted the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, followed by the early decades of the Republic during which newspapers around the young country were open and transparent about their fierce allegiance to one political party or the other. It was only at the start of the Progressive Era and the 20th century that the supposed "objectivity of the press" first surfaced, leaving us where we are today: with a partisan party-press overwhelmingly aligned with a political ideology but hypocritically engaged in a massive untruth as to its real nature.

Brave New Medicine: A Doctors Unconventional Path to Healing Her Autoimmune Illness

Description of Brave New Medicine: A Doctors Unconventional Path to Healing Her Autoimmune Illness

Review I love this booka harrowing and somehow also charming account by a brilliant doctor of how she healed her body, mind, spirit, and soul from a debilitating autoimmune disease. After her doctors had given up on her, with a husband and two little children at home, she broke out of the constraints of Western medicine and found her way home to health, renewal, and her own true self. This beautifully written, prescriptive book is going to changeand even savepeoples lives. Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author of Bird by Bird and Almost Everything -- Anne LamottEat, Pray, Love meets Anatomy of an Illness meets a Deepak Chopra workshop in this engaging, exquisitely written doctor-as-patient memoir. Cynthia Li humbly, humorously, and honestly unearths the roots of her debilitating illness, but the gifts dont stop there. With 15 practical, grounded tips for how to heal, this book also serves as an unconventional, whole health prescription, sure to facilitate the healing journey of others. With raw transparency and the kind of courage we need among both doctors and patients, Brave New Medicine charts a new terrain, bridging conventional medicine with functional medicine, nutrition, environmental health, intuition, and spiritualityall in a highly entertaining, hard-earned miracle story. Lissa Rankin, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Mind Over Medicine and The Daily Flame, and founder of the Whole Health Medicine Institute -- Lissa Rankin, MDIn Cynthia Lis spellbinding book, we encounter the moving story of a physician struggling with her own autoimmune illness. Li's writing is so intimateand so exactingthat it cuts like a knife. She raises fundamental questions about the future of medicine, her own future, and about being a doctor and a patient at the same time. The result is a beautiful book that will be read and remembered for years to come. Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies -- Siddhartha MukherjeeEach year brings a new stack of how-to health manuals, but Cynthia Lis book is different. Its a moving, personaland sometimes unsettlinginvestigation into the deepest questions surrounding chronic illness. What makes us sick? How do we live with the uncertainty of a mysterious condition? How do we define health in an age when conventional medicine focuses almost exclusively on disease management? The answers Li arrives at in her exploration changes her as a person, and the way she practices medicine. Her book is full of wisdom for both health care practitioners and those suffering from chronic illness. Chris Kresser, MS, LAc, New York Times bestselling author of Unconventional Medicine -- Chris Kresser, MS, LAcIt is a major concession to admit how much Lis book inspired me, given how deeply skeptical I am about alternative medicine. When Li, a physician herself, develops a terrifying syndrome that regular medicine cant even identify, she becomes her own doctor, charting her symptoms, doing experiments, and seeking help from whoever offers it. Emotionally, she rises from a crouch of defeat to the confident stride of an explorerand you will find yourself rising with her. Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Natural Causes, and founder of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project -- Barbara EhrenreichThis is a memoir for our time. Cynthia Li is a superbly trained physician of internal medicine whose life comes to a halt by a life-threatening, complex illness the mainstream medical community doesnt know how to treat. Her struggle is replicated thousands of times over by others who face similar mystery diseases. While the path to recovery is rarely simple, Lis journey and scientific explanations offer hope to many who are suffering. She writes with insight, wisdom, and passion. Her honesty will touch you deeply. Dont miss this book. Michael Lerner, author of Choices in Healing, and president and cofounder of Commonweal -- Michael LernerCynthia Li is an extraordinary physician with a comprehensive understanding of autoimmune disease as a practitioner and a patient. The insights she provides in this new book are essential for any patient suffering from autoimmunity. Her book challenges the current health care system model that is in such serious need of revision. This is a must-read for anyone suffering from an autoimmune disease. Datis Kharrazian, PhD, DC, award-winning researcher, clinician, and best-selling author of Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests Are Normal -- Datis Kharrazian, PhD, DCCynthia Li shares a deeply personal and inspiring journey, wherein she falls through the cracks of the conventional medical model but then discovers her own lifesaving path through functional and integrative medicine. Her book also includes an excellent resource, filled with practical tips for those who want to learn how to take natural steps to recover their own health and vitality. Akil Palanisamy, MD, integrative medicine physician, and author of The Paleovedic Diet -- Akil Palanisamy, MDBeautifully written, heartbreakingly honest, and deeply inspirational. This is the story of a doctor whose personal experience transforms her view of what it means to be sick, and what it means to truly heal. Millions of people living with autoimmune disease (myself included) will see themselves reflected in these pages. Eileen Laird, host of Phoenix Helix, a podcast dedicated to autoimmune health -- Eileen LairdCynthia Li has written an insightful, captivating account of her own spiral into the depths of a chronic disease, from which prospects of recovery seemed bleak. Li questions the foundational principles learned in her extensive medical training, including the meaning of the term health. Emerging from those dark days, Li has a message of hope for others with similar conditions: autoimmunity can be reversible. There is much to be learned by both patients and health care professionals from this deeply personal account. Ted Schettler, MD, MPH, science director of the Health and Environment Science Network, and author of The Ecology of Breast Cancer -- Ted Schettler, MD, MPH Read more About the Author Cynthia Li, MD, graduated from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and has practiced internal medicine in settings as diverse as Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital, and St. Anthony Medical Clinic for the homeless. Every Least Sparrow

Description of Every Least Sparrow

A child can simultaneously break your heart and set it free. Such is the case with Jennifer Walker, born with the rare Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, which severely challenges her mental and physical capabilities, even as it piques her mother’s dread of the unknown. Jennifer’s is a disorder that most doctors have never encountered, one that informs the story of Every Least Sparrow. On the night of her birth, the Walkers’ pediatrician lays out a new reality that will upend their household. He speaks of deformities that make no sense: spatula thumbs, cathedral palate, webbed neck, beak nose, a bird face.Confused and frightened, baby in hand, determined to find healing and understanding, Jennifer’s mother, a journalist writing about life in their small midwestern town, embarks on a quest that takes them from doctor to doctor, hospital to hospital, and state to state. It’s a quest filled with surgeries, therapies, and educational interventions, mitigated by Jennifer’s love of music and her fun, curious obsession with the Titanic – one that forces her mother to examine her own prejudices. Her combined private and professional lives impact Jennifer’s mother in a profound way, creating for her a new understanding of what it means to be wife, mother, and human being.Filled with natural self-esteem, Jennifer never realizes she is different from others. Instead, she becomes their teacher, proving that disability is but a notion. Spirited and impish, brave and loving, she takes her obstacles in stride, and throws herself into the excitement of life – friendships, romance, employment. Those who know her eventually come to think of Jennifer, in her lack of prejudice and guile, as someone to be envied. Jennifer proves to all in the most affecting way that it’s possible to surmount seemingly impossible hurdles, live fully, and love unconditionally.

The Yellow House: A Memoir (2019 National Book Award Winner)

Description for The Yellow House: A Memoir (2019 National Book Award Winner)

Review Praise for The Yellow House Winner of the 2019 National Book Award for NonfictionA New York Times BestsellerNamed a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times Book ReviewNamed one of the 10 Best Books of 2019 by the New York Times Book Review, Seattle Times, Chicago Public Library, the Chicago Tribune, and SlateNamed a Best Book of 2019 by the Washington Post, NPRs Book Concierge, NPRs Fresh Air, the Guardian, BookPage, New York Public Library, and Shelf AwarenessNamed a Best Memoir of the Decade by LitHub[An] extraordinary, engrossing debut . . . kinetic and omnivorous . . . [Broom] pushes past the baseline expectations of memoir as a genre to create an entertaining and inventive amalgamation of literary forms. Part oral history, part urban history, part celebration of a bygone way of life, The Yellow House is a full indictment of the greed, discrimination, indifference and poor city planning that led her familys home to be wiped off the map. It is an instantly essential text, examining the past, present and possible future of the city of New Orleans, and of America writ large.?New York Times Book Review [A] forceful, rolling and many-chambered new memoir.... [Broom's] memoir isnt just a Katrina story ? it has a lot more on its mind. But the storm and the way it scattered her large family across America give this book both its grease and its gravitas.... This book is dense with characters and stories. Its a big, simmering pot that comes to a boil at the right times.... This is a major book that I suspect will come to be considered among the essential memoirs of this vexing decade. There are a lot of complicated emotions coursing through its veins. It throws the image of an exceptional American city into dark relief.?New York Times The memoir from Louisiana native Broom tells the story of her mothers beloved shotgun house in east New Orleans and the family she raised there. The house was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and Broom writes about the racial and economic inequality that has haunted New Orleans for decades. Author Heidi Julavits called the book a masterpiece of history, politics, sociology and memory.?Los Angeles Times, 7 Highly Anticipated Books to Get You Through the Dog Days of August Brooms book is a memoir ? but also so much more. The New Orleans native has written a hybrid of the most exquisite kind, part family history, part archaeological dig, part self-exegesis. It all comes back to the house of the title, a New Orleans East shotgun dwelling that has given hope, heartbreak, shelter and transformation to decades of Brooms family. And Broom has used it to inspire something new.?Washington Post, The 10 Books to Read in August Im most excited about reading The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom. I tend to love books that capture a sense of place, and Ive always been fascinated with New Orleans. Like Jamaica, New Orleans is a destination people seek out to have a good time, but few people see the reality behind the touristy facade. Very rarely do I see a story of the people who have been in New Orleans for generations?this memoir promises an intimate, beautiful portrait of a black family and the place they call home.?Nicole Dennis-Benn in Vanity Fair A remarkable journey...Her tale is one of loss, love, and resilience.?Robin Roberts, Good Morning America Sarah M. Broom's gorgeous debut, The Yellow House, reads as elegy and prayer. The titular house is the fulcrum for Broom's memoir about her large and complex family. Perhaps more important, it stands in for the countless ways America has failed and continues to fail African Americans...Sarah M. Broom is a writer of great intellect and breadth. She embraces momentous subjects. The Yellow House is about the relentless divestment of wealth from the African American family no matter how hard its members work; and our government's failure to protect its poor from predictable environmental catastrophe and subsequent trauma; and our gross neglect of poor neighborhoods; and sham promises that never materialize or are broken too easily, and the papering over of deep systemic problems by politicians and we the people. The Yellow House is also about the persistence of love and grit...There's a young woman whose winding journey takes her away from and back to her family, as she circumnavigates the world in order to connect with herself ? which means coming to the sober reckoning that some holes can never be filled.?NPR One of the years best memoirs, The Yellow House finds an epic, fascinating, empathetic history of New Orleans within the life of one woman, her family, and the home they grew up in...The book is at once intimate and sprawling, spinning at times dozens of stories in what amounts to a vital reframing of a misrepresented community, and an urgent meditation on the American dream.?David Canfield, Entertainment Weekly The title of Sarah M. Brooms debut memoir refers to the east New Orleans home her mother bought in 1961. There, Broom was raised alongside her 11 siblings in a part of the city that became riddled with crime and poverty. InThe Yellow House, Broom traces back a hundred years worth of her family history and the hardships they faced. She pays particular attention to Hurricane Katrina, which completely destroyed the familys house. In its aftermath, Broom examines what it really means to rebuild roots and how to define a home.?Time, Here Are the 11 New Books You Should Read in August Brooms memoir of poverty, striving, and justice in pre and post-Katrina-stricken New Orleans concerns rising tides, the literal ones that took her childhood home, and the structural ones, too, that, instead of lifting all, are threatening to drown. Broom has a reporters eye but an essayists heart, blending urban history of her segregated home city and her familys attempt to survive in it.?Vogue NOLA Darling, Sarah M. Broom's obsession with her childhood home in New Orleans is the focal point of her intimate nonfiction debut...This brave work delves into such issues as poor housing, subpar health care, family bonds, personal erasure and survival.?Essence In her tough yet tenderly wrought book The Yellow House, [Broom] explores ... the long-term effects of erasure and the price of staking a claim on unpredictable territory.... The label 'memoir' doesnt quite contain?or honor?the entirety of what Broom has accomplished. The Yellow House is both personal and sharply political; its an attempt to redraw not just the map of New Orleans but also the citys narrative?to reset it on its foundation...Meticulously observed and expansively researched, Brooms inquiry is an excavation...She plunges into the familys deep, uncertain history; stories pieced together about her maternal grandmother Ameilia ('Lolo'), her Auntie Elaine and her mother, Ivory Mae, are touchstones, pins in the new map...These elder voices, thick with the rhythm and texture of time and place, are a chorus of narrators, the forebears who navigated a stratified, racially segregated map. They weigh in, testify, spin tangents. Its the books music...In New Orleans, there is a parade call-and-response refrain?a funky roll call, if you will?that asks revelers to shout out their provenance?the New Orleans neighborhood from which they hail. Where you from? The Yellow House is Brooms luminous, literary answer to that appeal...Brooms work is a shoring-up, a strengthening. Its the result of tenacious naming and claiming, revisiting all the histories?formal and informal, polished and rough. She worked with great care, and with a resolute honesty leavened with grace. Readers may hear echoes of James Baldwin in the relentlessness of her inquiry, and in the sinewy cadences of her sentences...Pared down to its studs, The Yellow House is a love story. It is a declaration of unconditional devotion and commitment to place. Broom also pays homage to the relationships we protect, the ones we yearn for and circle back to; the ones that hold us and dont give up on us, that are our living and breathing foundation.?Los Angeles TimesSarah M. Brooms book is an extraordinary example of how language can make things. Her words, sentences, thoughts as she creates East New Orleans?where she was born?move faster than you will ever keep up?but you damn sure dont want to let go.?John Edgar Wideman, author of Writing to Save A Life: The Louis Till Project Every few years, a book comes along that teaches readers of memoir how to read and writers of memoir how to write. Calling Sarah M. Brooms The Yellow House a memoir feels wrong. Somehow, Broom created a book that feels bigger, finer, more daring than the form itself. The Yellow House literally taught me how to read and write. I will never write or read about family, longing, blackness, femininity, joy and state-sanctioned terror the same way after sitting with this book. Broom narratively glides through choppy air almost in slow-motion, and when I least expect it, she digs into the ground of New Orleans conjuring the most humanely massive intervention Ive read in 21st century memoir writing.?Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy A great, multigenerational family story . . . Broom is an engaging guide; she has some of David Simons effortless reporting style, and her meditations on eroding places recall Jeannette Walls. The house didnt survive Katrina, but its destruction strengthened Brooms appreciation of home. Brooms memoir serves as a touching tribute to family and a unique exploration of the American experience.?Publishers Weekly The Yellow House is a masterpiece of history, politics, sociology and memory. Actually, its just a masterpiece, period. Sarah M. Brooms carefully researched portrait of a family and a place possesses the emotional vastness of a multi-generational novel, and shies away from nothing. Her pages are artfully controlled, meditative logic proofs of heartbreak, humor, devastation, celebration and rage. Broom shows what literary nonfiction?and what books?can yet do and be. I already consider her to be one of Americas most important and influential writers.?Heidi Julavits, author of The Folded Clock Gorgeously written, intimate and wise, Sarah M. Brooms The Yellow House is an astonishing memoir of family, love, and survival. Its also a history of New Orleans unlike any weve seen before, one that should be required reading.?Jami Attenberg, author of All Grown Up A heartfelt but unflinching recovery project . . . Brooms lyrical style celebrates her family bonds, but a righteous fury runs throughout the narrative at New Orleans injustices, from the foundation on up. A tribute to the multitude of stories one small home can contain, even one bursting with loss.?Kirkus Reviews From a singular writer, a crucial memoir of life on the margins?one that, through ruthless observation and deepest intelligence, might help reintegrate what happens in those margins into the central narratives of American life. Alternating gracefully between immediacy and critical distance, she leaves us with deep insight not just into her own family, her own community, but into governance, justice, and inequality in the round. Timeless in its telling, The Yellow House could become a modern classic.?Whiting Nonfiction Grant Jury Read more About the Author Sarah M.
